Hello, my name is Lisa Stokes and welcome to my website. I discovered Powerlifting in 2005, and I'm now a totally addicted and dedicated strength athlete. My addiction paid off recently and I was fortunate enough to represent Australia for the first time last year; the year I tuned 40. I believe women should be strong, I believe we can all be inspirational and, I believe age and sex are no excuse.
For those who are unfamiliar with Powerlifting, they call it the 'Strongest Sport in the World'. Powerlifting is of relatively modern origin, with the first formal competitions occurring in the mid 1960s. Distinct from weightlifting, a sport made up of two lifts: the Snatch and the Clean-and-Jerk, where the weight is lifted above the head, Powerlifting comprises three lifts: the Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift. Powerlifting competitions may be comprised of one, two or all three of the lifting disciplines. Athletes are categorised by sex, age and bodyweight. Each competitor is allowed three attempts at each lift, the best lift in each discipline being added to their total. The lifter with the highest total is the winner.
I wasn’t always an athlete and, in fact, the travels to my current place in life started as a slightly overweight, 30-something mum and career girl wanting to get into good shape. It has been quite the adventure and I have collected all sorts of experiences along the way ranging from the 12 week body challenges, corporate triathlons, a few years of body building and many, many moments of body image issues and loathing. Balance is achievable and my website is a place where I hope to show you the balance that I have, although I still have my struggles too!
